July 2012

The library has a few new books that are on the best seller lists.....

FICTION
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is a mystery surrounding the disappearance of a woman on the day of her fifth wedding anniversary.  The story has many twists and turns and it will keep you guessing til the very end..... soon to be a motion picture.

Gold by Chris Cleave  is the story of two women cyclists who are friends, but also competitors who are vying for the same seat on the 2012 Olympic team.  It is a story of betrayal, love, competition and very timely as we watch the competitors in London.  I recommend it though I liked Cleave's other books better...... This doesn't measure up to Little Bee.

A few others are:  The Next Best Thing by Jennifer Weiner, Wicked Business by Janet Evanovich and Summerland by Elin Hilderbrand.

I just finished The Gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Faye.  It is a book about the formation of the New York City Police Department in the mid 1800s and the wave of Irish immigrants who settled in New York at the same time.  More than that, it is a mystery that is well conceived and suspenseful.

NONFICTION

The library has Wild by Cheryl Strayed - A woman's account of a hike along the Pacific Coast.  It has gotten great reviews.

Another bestseller on the library shelves is Killing Lincoln by Bill O-Reilly and Martin Dugard.  This recount the events surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

One that I have just started is The Violinist's Thumb: and Other Lost Tales of Love, War and Genius by Sam Kean.  It is the story of the discovery of DNA and the relationship of our genetic code to our lives.  While it sounds like a dry topic, it is absolutely fascinating and easy to understand.
